What Is Agentic Advertising?

Agentic advertising is the planning, buying, and selling of media by AI agents that transact with each other over open, machine-readable standards, with humans setting the outcome and the guardrails. A buyer declares a business result, and software agents handle the work between that declaration and the verified outcome: seller discovery, negotiation, execution, pacing, and optimization.

The term describes a way of operating, not a channel or a protocol. It applies to CTV, display, video, audio, and retail media as much as to AI surfaces such as chatbots and assistants. On the buy side, agents translate goals into structured briefs and negotiate price and placement. On the sell side, agents represent inventory, respond to briefs, and enforce publisher policy. The two sides communicate over shared open standards rather than bilateral integrations, and people remain in the loop to approve plans, set limits, and sign off on anything the agents escalate.

How does agentic advertising work?

An agentic transaction starts with a declared outcome rather than a media plan. The advertiser or agency states the goal, for example a target cost per acquisition, and a buy-side agent converts it into a structured brief. The brief goes to sell-side agents in parallel, proposals come back in a common schema, the buyer's agent selects and executes, and it then optimizes continuously toward the declared outcome for the life of the flight. Governance runs alongside the transaction: budgets, brand safety rules, and approval thresholds are checked before a buy commits, and anything outside the approved plan is escalated to a person.

How is agentic advertising different from programmatic?

What changes is who makes the decisions, what they decide against, and how the two sides connect.

What protocols power agentic advertising?

Several open standards power agentic advertising, and no single one defines the category. The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is the common transport that lets agents call tools and each other. On top of it, two industry efforts specify how advertising agents transact.

The Ad Context Protocol (AdCP), stewarded by AgenticAdvertising.org and currently at version 3.1, defines agent-native tasks for the campaign lifecycle: product discovery, briefs and refinement, media buy creation, creative sync, governance checks, and delivery reporting. IAB Tech Lab's Agentic Advertising Management Protocols (AAMP), currently at version 2.3, extends the standards that already run programmatic, including OpenRTB, OpenDirect, and AdCOM, so that agents can operate them, and adds an agent registry and buyer and seller SDKs. The two overlap more than their names suggest, and most operators will end up supporting both. Is agentic advertising real today?

Yes, agent-to-agent transactions moved from theory to production in January 2026. FreeWheel and NBCUniversal executed the first cross-platform agentic media buy over MCP, with buy-side agents negotiating directly with sell-side agents. A major supply-side platform launched an agent-to-agent operating system in the same period, and AdCP 3.1 and AAMP 2.3 both shipped within the same quarter in mid-2026. On the AI surface side, conversational inventory has already produced performance benchmarks: pilot data showed 70% higher ROAS and 1.5x stronger click-to-convert on conversational AI inventory versus traditional channels, results consistent with how conversational ads work.
